​Precipitation and decanting are used to separate insoluble substances heavier than liquids. During precipitation, the heavier components of the mixture are deposited at the bottom by gravity. Precipitation is carried out after decanting. Decanting involves pouring clear superfluous liquids out of a container without interfering with precipitation.
