​Photosynthesis is the process by which plants produce their own nutrients. Photosynthesis requires carbon dioxide in the air and water in the soil to produce sugar as its own nutrient. This process occurs in sunlight and in the presence of chlorophyll in plant leaves. The entire process of photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts of leaf mesophyll cells in two steps: capturing light energy and producing sugar.
